Blog Aug. 30
Sunday, August 30 - Spent some time at Johnson City Field Days. The weather
was outstanding today and the event well-attended. I began distributing my
newly printed palm card. Response was good. It seemed the event was even
more local than I imagined. Almost everyone I spoke with was from JC. I thought
going in there would be a broader crowd.
Earlier in the day I must say I was appalled by a Press & Sun-Bulletin news story
that seem to support cutting the Binghamton Department and even mentioned
eliminating it completely.
If this was to occur the burden of policing the city would fall to Broome County.
This is a poor idea for the county and the city.
In the Press & Sun-Bulletin article they compared Binghamton to Clay, NY where
they voted to eliminate the local police department.
What the Press & Sun-Bulletin failed to mention was that Clay, NY is a far more
affluent community with a median income of $55,800. Binghamton's is $26,400.
Clay has SEVEN times LESS crime than Binghamton. Clay has 2 registered sex
offenders within a population of 58,805 people compared to about 113 for
Binghamton 47,389 (2006).
When Binghamton nearly doubles its median income and reduces its crime by a
factor of SEVEN it can think about eliminating it police department.
